Day 2c The Rest of the Story

So here is the rest of the story I overlooked last night as I was typing away... As we left the arch we were very low on fuel - not a problem, right? After all, we are downtown so gas must be plentiful and we have a GPS. So, before leaving the river walk we program in a gas station that is only 1.5 miles away. Sounds like a plan.

As we begin to roll I realize that we are going to be going over a bridge and to the east - the wrong direction - so instead of going to that gas station, it seemed logical to jump back on I-70 West and find gas along the way (I figured we had a good 30 miles left on the gas we had, although it is a bit disconcerting when we already had traveled 10 miles after switching over to the reserve).

Traveling down the on ramp we saw that this might have been a mistake. The highway was packed and crawling at a snails pace! So we putted along to the next exit and decided that we had better take our chances off of the highway and true to form, that landed us in a very run down, low income area of the city! Only 10 to 15 blocks from the arch, we found ourselves in the middle of an area with graffiti, burned out apartment buildings, others that looked like they had been bombed - literally! - and a once beautiful church now neglected, but a shell of what it once had been, its many busted out stained glass windows an outward sign of what has occurred to the spiritual fiber of the community.

As we were in that area, we stopped at a gas station the GPS recommended and must confess that I still felt safe, as if the Lord was before us, beside us and behind us all the way. There was not even a hint of a problem. It seems that we were given an opportunity to more fully appreciate the many blessings we have received!

Don't worry Mom, we kept our widows up and doors locked!

PS Welcome aboard, Ellen. We are going to try your restaurant today.

PPS I will post my captains log for the day later. It simply will not upload from the hotel for some reason.
